My name is Pete Nisbet and I am a chemist with a specific interest in biochemistry, energy, cellular respiration and weight loss/muscle gain.

You have likely read endless quick weight loss tips and are possibly confused. Perhaps you have tried one or two diets or slimming tips that either did not work for you or only partially worked, or perhaps your diet is enabling you to maintain the shape and weight you want but is very difficult for you to maintain.

The slimming tips you will find here are neither diet nor exercise oriented, but explain why people put on weight and why they lose it. The reasons for you doing what is needed to slim or lose weight (the two are not the same) are explained, and the quick weight loss tips provided are based upon sound science, not the latest exercise machine or diet fad.

It’s unacceptable for men and women to have to live a lifestyle dictated by the food their current diet tells them they can and cannot eat, and this website has been put together to explain the true facts about how diets work and why, while exercise is usually part of any weight loss program, it is possible to lose weight with no specific exercise program. Our slimming tips will explain how.

OK, if you feel safer with a diet having read what we have to say, then we can give you access to some pretty good ones. However, all that such diets will do will be to dictate to you what you should and should not eat.

You will come across many quick slimming tips and weight loss tips that will fail to adequately explain the science between eating and losing weight.

Here are some scientific facts, but before I start, check to the left and if you see any topics or slimming tips there that interest you, then you can either read through this page or simply click on what you feel more relevant to you personally.

You will get some information from this introductory page, but if you already know it then simply click to read more about what's on your mind right now. All of the comments, discussions and reports you will read on my website are totaly impartial and based upon proven scientific fact, not opinion.

Where there is opinion you will be informed, and where a theory has not been substantiated, then you will also be informed. Otherwise, the following facts are just that - facts!

The Calorie and the Joule

You have heard the term before, so the word 'Calorie' will not confuse you. In science, a calorie is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius.

It has largely been superseded by the Joule, and one calorie is equivalent to 4.1868 joules (1 joule = 0.24 calories approx). So if you ever see foods stated with their energy content in Joules, simply multiply it by 4 to find the approximate number of calories it equates to. It's approximate, but near enough for your needs.

The propensity of food to make you fat is generally stated in terms of the amount of calories it contains. Heat is energy, so the more calories in the food you eat, then the more energy you consume. That is an important concept when you try to understand the science behind the quick weight loss tips and slimming tips you will find here, because it is the basis of the Energy Equation explained below.

Note: weight loss and slimming are not exactly the same, and adding weight does not mean getting fat: you could be getting more muscular. It all depends on diet and exercise, and it is all explained on this website.

The Energy Equation

The energy equation is a simple fact of your biochemistry. With very few exceptions your energy intake is determined by the energy contained within what you consume. In other words, the more calories in what you eat or drink, then the more energy you take into your body.

Normally that will be food - either solid or liquid, in the form of drinks. However, sometimes it might be energy contained in supplements, medicines or anything else that enters your body - heck, even bacteria can be digested by your body and contribute to your energy intake.

You might not believe that you will find any quick weight loss tips that involve bacteria, but what about probiotics: what are these if not bacteria?

The energy equation is very simple. Basically it states that:

If you consume more energy than you use up then you will put on weight.

If you consume less energy than you use up, you will lose weight.

In other words, slimming tips #1: if you eat more calories than you use up in your metabolism and exercise, then you will put on weight, and if vice versa, then you will lose weight. Naturally, it is not totally correct, because some of these calories will be lost in waste, but it can be taken as a very good guide.

Typical Diets

The Atkins diet, telling you to take your energy intake as fats and animal proteins is not wrong as long as you exercise enough to burn these off. If you do, you will lose weight, and if not you will gain weight. It is quite simple. The Atkins diet may or may not work according to your metabolic rate (basically the energy you use up while sleeping), and those with low metabolic rates might even put weight on if they don't exercise enough.

There are no slimming tips I can give you here in relation to diets, other than those that may come through in discussing the two diets below that are genuine diets that have been advertised both online and offline in recent years. Try to understand my comments and the reasons for them in relation to these so-called quick weight loss tips. One has sound scientific reasoning, but the other perhaps not.

If you are wondering who I am to be giving you slimming tips and commenting on other's diets, them I am an honors degree chemist and understand the science behind these diets - whether it is valid or is not. I have also spent half a lifetime studying the benefits or demerits of various fad diets and also some fat exercising techniques.

A large part of the content you will read on this slimming tips website is based upon both personal experience and extensive reading and researching the internet for relevant information on weight loss, slimming, exercise, diet and the chemicals (both plant-based and manufactured)that aid in all of these.

Grapefruit Diet

The grapefruit diet works because the grapefruit contains relatively little fructose, so if you keep eating grapefruit you will lose weight. The grapefruit is also a diuretic for many people, meaning that it makes them pee a lot more, so they will lose more fluid - that equates to weight loss.

This is particularly so for those whose weight is partially due to fluid retention. If that is you then try grapefruit - it really does work. However, the grpafruit should not be the sole component of your dietbecause you also require fats and oprotein in your as well as carbohydrate (the sugars in grapafruit). Call that another quick weight loss tip, but not a slimming tip. You do not slim by peeing, but you do lose weight - at a rate of 10 lb/gallon!

Important: If you are on Feldipine or any other calcium channel blocker to reduce your blood pressure, then not take grapefruit with it. Grapfruit enhances the effect of Felodipine and it can be dangerous if you blood pressure gets too low.

So slimming tips #2: pee as much as you can! That's a bit facecious I know, but it is a fact. Most of your weight may very well be in the form of water retention, and for many people, the first significant weight loss they will Av experience is in water loss through urination. A diuretic or Vitamin B complex can help you with this.

However, once you have passed that rapid part of your initial weight loss, you have to consider the longer term. What will NOT help you is:

The Egg Diet

This is based on the premise that if you eat predominantly eggs then you will lose weight. Eggs are mainly protein, and it follows that if eggs are all you eat them then carbohydrate portion of the protein will be used as energy and not to add weight.

A protein molecule, as you will find later on the website, is composed of a carbohydrate tail and an amino acid head, and the tail is used for energy while the head is used to generate more proteins.

The egg diet basically operates on the same principle as the Atkins Diet: fewer carbohydrates leads to your metabolism having to burn fats and then protein for energy.

For me, however, too many boiled eggs bung me up and I put on weight because all I eat tends to stay somewhere between my throat and my anus! So the egg diet would certainly not work for me. This is definitely not a slimming tip, at least not until that day when I spend all day in the loo reducing my weight by world-record breaking amounts!!
