Eugenol

Eugenol is an allyl chain-substituted guaiacol. Eugenol is a member of the phenylpropanoids class of chemical compounds and is the main component of clove oil.

In medicine and dentistry eugenol is used as a local antiseptic and an anesthetic, and it has also been found to possess antifungal properties and can be used to prevent and treat a wide range of yeast infections such as Candida albicans, the pathogen responsible for most yeast infections in humans.

In that respect it can be used to treat many fungal infections of the ears, vagina and the skin in general, although the raw oil can cause irritation. In cinnamon, however, it is present in a less concentrated form and is safe to use for such infections.

Eugenol is also believed to be a powerful antioxidant, soluble in fat and so of particular benefit in preventing peroxidation of fatty cells in the body. Such oxidation can destroy your body cells, and cause accelerated aging. It can also lead to a build-up of fatty deposits of cholesterol and oxidized lipids in your arteries that can ultimately cause strokes and heart failure.

It also helps in the latter by preventing the abnormal clotting of the platelets in your blood.
